Happy Lady day!

Today the 15th of August is Lady Day (Feast of the Assumption) and in the past people in Wexford people would try visit the sea on this day.

This was done in other counties too including counties Waterford, Louth and Down. This sea-visiting tradition is still going strong in Brittany however it seems to have faded in popularity in Ireland the 1960s.

The idea is that you visit water on this day and sport and play and end it all by dipping your feet in the sea for a blessing. The ancient Pilgrimage to Our Lady’s Island in Wexford also starts on this day too and in the past there was even a custom of walking around the island with one foot on land and the other in the water.

The day is also important with some of the rural Catholic communities in Newfoundland as they mark Lady Day with celebrations and feasting of their new potatoes and vegetables. Sadly the 15th of August also heralded the end of Summer season for many and this was the last weekend many holiday makers had at the sea.

We have an action-packed weekend to look forward to here in Dunhill.

Saturday 13th July 10 am Dunhill Sports Centre
Will be promoting their healthy club status with a variety of events throughout the morning, which will have something for everyone, from scavenger hunts to social hurling and planting wildflowers. Then there will be a presentation of monies raised from the recent Darkness into light walk in aid of Pieta House.

Sunday 14th July 10am - 2pm at Dunhill Community Hall There will be the annual summer artisan market. This is always a wonderful day with a lovely warm atmosphere and is always very well supported locally. There will be approximately 30 stalls offering: cakes, bakes, preserves, chocolates, coffee, vegetables, skincare, candles, ceramics, just to mention a few... and we will be there with some products from our shop and also some of our salads too, and if all goes well we'll even have 'Irene' our ice cream machine in attendance.

As always, these events take an awful lot of preparation and planning behind the scenes, which can often take months and more often than not completed by a team of volunteers, which would explain how they run like clock work - well done folks! 👏

Here in Ireland, we are obsessed with the weather, aren't we!

Today's weather can only be described as a dirty aul day. It is misty, damp, warm, heavy, dull, and also annoying as we're meant to be enjoying bright, warm sunshine by now!

As a small independent business, some days we're flying it, which is great, but then other days there may as well be a tumble w**d rolling past the door - those are the hard days. You see, other than specific times of the year, there are patterns in footfall (or, in our case, carfall), and they're mostly weather dependent - but we've got to take the bad with the good don't we...

On this misty day, I'm feeling autumnal vibes along with summertime ones too, with its dampness that has my washed, dried and straightened hair going frizzier by the minute to the humidity (or closeness as my granny used to say) in the air that is wreaking havoc with my hormones which has me firmly gripped to my fan, just so I feel relief of the slightest little breeze to atmospheric pressure headaches following me around like the monster in recent film 'Eric' starring - have you watched it yet?

On the plus side, there's always ice cream! 😋

💚💚ATTENTION - GUSH ALERT💚💚

I just wanted to congratulate my Paul .farm on completing his first farm walk for the distance learning students .college - some of you may know that this is where Paul's growing journey began so it was a pleasure for him to be asked by his former tutor if he'd do a farm walk for her students.👏

I also wanted to give a massive thanks to all who supported our farm shop on the day. It was really appreciated. It just goes to show how a little support goes a long way and helps us to keep supporting local Irish producers, too! 😍

It's raining, it's pouring...

"There is no such thing as bad weather. You just need to wear the right clothes, don't you?" I'm quoting my Paul .farm. He says this ALL the time, and he ought to know, he's out in all weathers...

So, we had a wintery esq day here today in Dunhill, but the atmosphere couldn't have been any warmer. I got to meet some lovely new people from Waterford, Wexford, Dublin, and Yorkshire. Made connections, had great chats, and laughed, and my dad even met a like-minded soul called John, from Yorkshire, who also loves old radio's. As they were channelling their inner 'bromance' they really were transmitting on the same wavelength, taking the radio apart and putting it back together again - sorry that's so corny, I just couldn't resist... 🙊

Later we met the funniest, sweetest four year old little boy who wanted to know why I was taking his mammy's money until I explained I was only swapping it for his sweets, we were all good then apparently! Bless him!

Two things I absolutely adore about what I do are working with wonderful, lrish local producers and people! That's it, no more, no less. In a nutshell, it's really as simple as that everything else is just a bonus. No, two days are ever the same, and I love it when the door swings open and regular friendly faces pop in or, indeed, when inquisitive new faces come to visit.

As a lovely lady called Georgina said today, "There's serendipity for you."... I love that! ❤️

We have had a fresh delivery of .farm beautiful mixed beetroot - such a versatile vegetable.

Beetroot is lovely roasted on a warm goats cheese salad, in a sandwich (don't knock it until you've tried it😋) freshly grated on salads, made into soup, hummous, and of course pickled. Have I left anything out? Do let me know! 👌

Let us introduce you to . Conbini was founded by Holly Dalton, a chef with over 15 years of professional kitchen experience and a lifelong love of Japan.

Conbini was built upon the Japanese concept of yōshoku (洋食, western food) referring to a style of Western-influenced cooking which originated during the Meiji Restoration and their namesake comes from Japanese Convenience Stores or konbini (コンビニ).

Conbini is all about making Japanese inspired pantry staples that would be welcome on any table. Their condiments provide a convenient flavour boost whenever you need it. Get used to having these guys in your kitchen.

Currently in store are:

Sunday sauce - which can be used in stir fries, slathered on sausage sandwiches or even on your Sunday roast to add a flavoursome savoury kick.

Katsu ketchup - is wonderful on a burger, delicious on fries or for dipping goujons, but really great for amping up flavour in a curry!

Would you say you love cooking or hate cooking?

I have often been heard saying I hate it. But, in truth, what I hate is having to do all the other stuff as well as having to get the dinner sorted. The 'mental load' is what it's called these days... and it doesn't often leave me feeling too inspired. However, to help with this, I usually set a weekly meal plan, which helps me to shop more effectively, reducing any potential waste, and above all, it stops the 'What's for dinner?'' question - we love that one dont we... 😉

Today, though, I was in the mood for cooking a decent dinner, and boy, was it decent? No, I would go as far as saying it was superb! 👌

To describe it in basic terms, the dinner was pretty much salmon fishcakes with new potatoes and spinach. Which I have cooked over and over throughout the years, but none exceeded these!

As some of you will know, I have a bit of a penchant for recipe books, which I base most of my weekly meal plans on. Guilty pleasure, I suppose - just a simple creature at heart...

Today's recipe was based on Made Simple by Siobhan Wightman - Salmon Patties with Two Dips (I only made the lemon and dill dip - Sorry Siobhan, I'm sure the spicy red pepper dip would have been just as delicious!) 😋

Main ingredients:

salmon fillets, peppers, herbs, fat-free greek yoghurt, sweetcorn

Darren's organically grown new potatoes have travelled less than 20 minutes to reach us here in Dunhill.

Even though we're closed today, I popped in to deep clean 'Irene' our ice cream machine (managed a PB too - 40 mins... 💪) - Irene, the ice cream machine, is fondly named after my sons' Nannie Rene, who is such a sweet, sweet lady 💖

This job was meant to be completed yesterday evening as i was finishing up until Tuesday, but I was just too sick to manage it, so today had to be the day as it isn't a job that can be put off at all and anyone who knows me well will know that it would have come between me and my sleep if it wasnt spotless, so I'm fighting fit again, have the music playing again, which is always a good sign... 😃

I scream, you scream, our sign screams ICE CREAM!

Some of you may know that we recently purchased an ice cream machine here in the shop.

With it sitting idle not earning its keep for a few weeks I decided to follow some very well meant advice which came from lots of regular customers, friends and family members each telling me I need a nice 'BIG' sign so everyone passing by would see that we now offer ice cream, that made sense, so off I went venturing online.

To say I trawled through many a website would be an underestimate... It felt like I'd looked at every sign known to man, mostly focusing on colours and designs before deciding on my perfect sign. I then, of course, needed to tell the website what size I wanted, and here lay the problem. Anyone close to me will know that it is a running joke in our house how I measure things - usually by eye...

It was a trepidatious moment when unwrapping our lovely new sign, I went from feeling unsure to then laughing at the sheer size of it - having lived with it for a while, I now love it - because you can certainly see our 'BIG' sign from the road! 😁

Let us introduce you to Joe and Sandra Burns - husband and wife duo behind an award winning range of crisps based in Killeagh, East Cork

Let us introduce you to created by Norbert Thul - Chef and .wd Culinary Arts lecturer. Established in 2017 based in Dunhill, Frothing Ferments proudly produces a range of 'gut friendly' products aimed at supporting the whole health system.

Frothing Ferments products are produced by using time honoured Lacto Fermentation methods in small batches, sustainably packaged in glass jars and bottles.

Products:

Sriracha (Hot Chilli sauce) is very popular and comes with a warning - telling us to 'beware' as this sauce is not only fiery, it will cause a compulsion to sprinkle it on everything you eat... it can be enjoyed with chips, over eggs, as a dipping sauce, or added to anything that requires a bit of a kick!
