The connection between the parable of the mustard seed and Herod’s building projects lies in the contrast Jesus was making between human greatness and the kingdom of God.

Herod’s Building Projects: A Symbol of Earthly Power

Herod the Great was known for his ambitious architectural projects, including Herodium and Masada, where he literally moved mountains to construct his grand fortresses. At Herodium, he had the top of a mountain removed and reshaped to create a palace fortress, a visible display of his power and dominance. This was an incredible engineering feat, symbolizing human strength, control, and empire-building.

The Mustard Seed: A Different Kind of Greatness

In contrast, Jesus taught about the mustard seed—a tiny seed that grows into a large tree-like plant (Matthew 13:31-32, Mark 4:30-32, Luke 13:18-19). This parable emphasizes that God’s kingdom starts small but grows into something significant, providing shelter and blessings. Unlike Herod, who forced mountains to change for his own glory, the mustard seed grows naturally, reflecting God’s power over time rather than human efforts.

The Implied Message

Jesus may have intentionally referenced Herod’s mountain-moving projects when He spoke about faith moving mountains (Matthew 17:20). While Herod used brute force and wealth to alter landscapes, Jesus was pointing to a spiritual transformation—one that starts with faith as small as a mustard seed and grows into something far greater than earthly empires. The kingdom of God, unlike Herod’s fortresses, would endure and expand by divine power rather than human strength.
