A / What’s on the cover

Jean Cocteau and Peggy Guggenheim’s friendship began in 1938 and later found its rhythm again in Venice — the city tying their stories together and celebrated in “Jean Cocteau: The Juggler’s Revenge” at .

One of Anomali’s covers features Hand of the Artist (circa 1962), a rare proof from Jean-Pascal Lorriaux’s unfinished project capturing artists’ handprints — Cocteau’s among the few that survived.

The other draws from a visit Cocteau made to Peggy in 1956, when he left a spontaneous sketch in her guestbook at Palazzo Venier dei Leoni — a quiet, personal trace offered to the “last Dogaressa.”

Two fleeting gestures, revived on Anomali notebooks.

A/ What’s on the cover?

For this collaboration, the National Gallery of Iceland selected four themes that celebrate the dialogue between art, architecture, and heritage.

The first notebook features Jón and Nikulás (1930) by Ásgrímur Jónsson — a pioneer of Icelandic visual art and the first Icelander to dedicate his life fully to painting.
The second design takes inspiration from a Pencil drawing of a man surrounded by flowers (1858–1895) by Sölvi Helgason, one of Iceland’s most unconventional and rebellious artists, known for his richly colored floral compositions and wandering spirit.

The remaining two covers turn to architecture — to the National Gallery of Iceland itself, and to The House of Collections, the newest addition to the institution. Originally built in 1908 to house Iceland’s most important national collections.

Each cover becomes a fragment of a larger story — a meeting of past and present, where art and architecture are reimagined through design.

A/ What’s on the cover?

The Chamber of the Giants is the most spectacular space of Palazzo Te—one of the greatest examples of a Mannerist Renaissance villa, designed and built between 1525 and 1535 by Giulio Romano in Mantova, Italy.

The frescoes depict the Fall of the Giants, inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The cover of the Anomali notebooks features fragments of this epic scene—faces of the fallen giants at the moment divine vengeance is unleashed. Their expressions, filled with horror and despair, capture the destruction brought by Jupiter’s thunderbolts as they struggle in vain to storm Olympus.
